Also some distinctions need to be made between countries that practice good capitalism vs those that practice bad capitalism.
Countries that practice good capitalism have laws that support their capitalism such as the rule of law being enforced and clear property rights. Good capitalist countries also tend to be pro democratic. Bascially with the bad capitalist countries you don't find these things. China is an example of a bad capitalist country because it lacks the democracy and freedoms that the good capitalist countries have.
I was only talking about Cuba's economy and healthcare system. I agree their human rights record sucks. Fidel sucks. I'd never move to Cuba, because I'm all for democracy.
Why do you think Fidel used to travel to the US for medical treatments? Are you aware that Spanish doctors were called to Cuba to take care of him not too long ago? While there are a lot of doctors in Cuba, there isn't medicine nor equipment to take care of the people. A lot of the medicine finds its way into Cuba from canada, Mexico, Spain, and so forth
You are calling for government created shortages, inflated prices and reduced competition.
How will these things this benefit the consumer?
They will benefit the average American by giving them living-wage jobs and keeping prices of goods at reasonable levels relative to inflation. I'm not calling for reduced competition -- that's what capitalism does (monopoly), I'm calling for increased competition (private vs. public).
I don't think of people as "consumers." There's so much more to a human being than her capacity to consume.
Can we please stop talking about Cuba? Cuba is not the point, America is. Our economy sucks, our young people have very limited job opportunities, our rich people are getting richer while our middle class disappears. Capitalism is killing this country.
There are poor people in every large scale system our species has ever invented. Greed is a human nature, and corruption the by-product. With capitalism, we at least in theory all have a chance to rise above average. Tighten the reigns, as in socialism, and it is much harder to advance your lot in life. Maybe that is not important to you, and that is fine, but many in America feel differently. Since we are really the only country set up in this manner, you can understand our disdain for others trying to change that.

What industry will want to compete with the government? Any current examples to offer us?
When you restrict or remove the profit from a commodity, shortages and increased prices are the result.
Not really. Just a fan of economic freedom and opportunity. I like some of his stuff, but I don't agree with everything he says. I think Moore is too extreme.
I'm not saying we need an entirely centrally-planned economy, just one in which industry is heavily regulated and government-owned businesses compete with private ones. I'm not against private ownership or private property (though I do think there should be more public property and state-owned enterprises).
1. So wait, you like fascism? Because heavy regulation of industry like that is called fascism, where the government de facto owns the economy because of such heavy regulations
2.Half of maternal side of the family were born and raised in East Germany. They didn't have a car because there was an almost 15 year waiting period to get a Trabant, and the people that did have it, the car was horrible and was terrible quality. Same went for the infamous Yugo. Both cars built by state-owned enterprises
The problem with liberal Americans is that you they not personally related to anyone who lived through the tyranny of collectivist government. You don't know how the other side lived, and the only thing you have to bank on are the warm, cozy writings of Marx who talked of a collectivist society where no government existed (and yet liberals on here make fun of Libertarians for wanting limited government!), but the reality is that will never happen. No one ever gets a free lunch. Quid pro quo
I could show hospitals in Mississippi and then use that to try to prove how bad America's healthcare system is. That doesn't mean every hospital in America is garbage. Cuba at least has universal healthcare -- that was the point I was trying to make. Universal = better than what we have. I never said Cuba's hospitals were better than ours.
Also, forget Cuba. What about:
What about Sweden, Canada, Norway, France, Denmark, Finland, Australia, Canada, the U.K., Germany, Brazil, Chile? All those countries have socialist or social-capitalist systems and they all (except Brazil and Chile) have higher standards of living than the US. Cuba is the exception, and if it was democratic, it would be on par with those countries. Stop touting the exception over the rule.
