Someone should do the math and see how many millions we will save each day its shut down.

By the way, I'm a government contractor.
You know I agree with you, the government is out of control, we need smaller government, government contractors do need to be kept in check and yes NOVA is insanely expensive and they do need a reality check. But you paint all federal employees with the same brush and that is not correct, are there those working for the federal government that are a complete waste of gov't money? Yes there are, but there are also those that work their butts off for their agencies and they don't deserve to be lumped into the same category.

Don't kid yourself there will be consequences for both parties if the gov't shuts down, the Democrats for failing to pass the budget last year, but the Republicans will bear the brunt of it and Speaker of the House Boehner knows this. Ideals can only carry a party so far, but if that party is the minority those ideals will get them nowhere. Most Ameircans understand we need fiscal responsiblity but only when they don't have to pay the price. The 2012 budget that was laid out yesterday actually gave the Defense budget an increase but did not raise taxes. Unless the Republicans are willing to cut everything across the board than they are no better than the Democrats. You can make rash decisions based on emotions or you can take a step back and be rational, unfortunaley rationality seems to have been deserted, not only by this Congress but by a faction of the American people. What a sad state of affairs this is.

If the Republican's want to take back the government they need to be smart about how they deal with this, the remaining 5.5 months left on the 2011 budget is chump change considering what they want to get accomplished this year. They need to know when to accept that they have won, maybe not all they wanted, but they got more than the Democrats were willing to give, sometimes in life it can't be all or nothing.

Not quite as many millions as one may think, considering more than likely they will end up paying the furloughed workers backpay, they will have spent more than then made and will have accomplished nothing.

It really is all or nothing now. We can debate on WHAT to cut, but we must cut at least $ 1.5 Trillion in spending, period. End the wars, phase out social security, end hand outs, quit subsidizing unproductive businesses.

Not true. Military members will not get paid if there is a government shut-down, and that includes combat troops in-country.

you are obviously clueless about government. or, one of those haters who are mad that, for once, a government job has one-upped private industry by being recession-proof.

if it wasn't for Treasury, there would be no precious money in circulation for you idolatrous capaitalists. The IRS - yeah, I know, you despise them - collects monies to allocate to various "socialist" activities...you know, medicare, parks, libraries, road, infastructure, defense, keeping japan's irradiated food from being consumed by the US (no disrespect Japan).

Government workers work very hard. Try picking on the blood-sucking contractors who make a living off of selling the government over-priced, over-valued "assets" that they stretch out until they can find the next sucker...I mean vendor...to leach off of.

Try picking on Apple and the rest of these "Smart"-phone producers and app developers who sell you stuff that you so dearly consider valuable produce; an app that tells you whether you are pretty or not, an app that tells you the name of that song you just can't figure out the title for.

Stop hating. You are, obviously, one of those capitalist-fascists that roam city data like an imp.

They have and we don't save any money. It actually ends up costing us more. And a shut down could cause us to default on a lot of our loans which would be a disaster for our country.

At this point and time there are no appropriations to fund the military past April 8th, the CR that Boehner has created would fund the gov't an additional week and included appropriations to fund the military through Sept 30. People really should read a variey of media sources as opposed to the one that caters to their beliefs.

Why do the military need to be paid? They are already getting free room, board, clothing, healthcare, travel ??

And your lying President, telling everyone they have to attend meetings at the WH to avoid a shut down, then leaving town. To do what? Oh, yea, campaign, in spite of the fact that he lied AGAIN about not campaigning, and taking off on his 3rd campaign event in 3 days.

Who's being dense? Passing a budget is an action. Not passing the budget is a non-action. And it's the Republicans that are putting through the CR's.
