Yeah, some people have doubts about this. But it's a very competitive world. As a student I think a college degree is essential to succeed in this tough world.

There are no guarantees, so I think it's a bit much to say a college degree = a bright future.

However, time has shown that college graduates are less likely to be poor, earn about a million dollars more in their lifetime on average than non-college graduates.

There are loads of exceptions to the rule, but that's what the trends are.

Now here come the posts about "my brother-in-law" who's a millionaire with a 7th grade education... There are exceptions, but the exceptions don't make the trend.

no guarantees, and it definitely depends on your major, among other things. there are some interesting threads about this on the education forum.

It is not essential, a good thing to do, but not essential. I know plenty of college grads without jobs or working at a convenience store. I don't have a degree, went to a technical school for 6 months and am working in a technical field making a pretty good living. Could I have done better if I really tried? Sure, but like I said, it really isn't essential. College these days is just a cash cow for the most part.

There's nothing more irritating than a newly-graduated person who has no idea how to transfer their knowledge to the job of their choosing. Make sure you have experience and certifications to accompany that degree. Even still, there's no guarantee to a "bright" future.

If you can't graduate from high school, you might have a dimmer future.

I only consider "college" to be a well respected 4 year university that accepts people based on merit. Other "colleges" (which are consumer fraud) might not help you too much. But university is the beginning of the road. You have to pick a good major and you have to actually learn something. If you pick a bullcrap major and partied all through college, then you are worth as much as somebody who never went.

There are many good careers that require a college degree. For sure the opportunities for those who went to college is better than that of those who did not.

Now there is nothing wrong with other non-university paths. It's just more difficult to get into the highest paying jobs unless you have some great talent and make your own way.
