I'm content with the effort of this president to address the debt. He is realistic in tackling it and chipping away at it, while addressing the ENORMOUS other problems created or worsened by 8 years of Bush/Republican policies.
We CAN'T pay off the debt, ever. If we do we won't have any currency, this is why we can't do it. The only way to do it is to end the Fed, issue debt free currency and pay off the debt with it.

It is a ridiculous idea. I remember in the last years of Clinton there was a surplus and foreign investors complained of a shortage of treasury bills. China will keep buying them to keep the dollar strong. Some investors even favor the dollar over the euro. And I don't need to bring up the yen.

We should try to pay it off. We would have to have spending cuts, tax increases, and entitlement reform. All three unpopular ideas.

"Is it useless to even try to pay off the US national debt?"

It sure is. Mainly, because soon jesus will come. Americans should try to spend more time in their churches.

You live in America? You want to say that Americans don't believe that Jesus is coming soon? How well do you know America?
The approaching 'end times' means no future. So no debts.

He ran a deficit every year. For a couple of years we used Social Security surplus to mask the regular budget deficit but our debt still grew.
