Japan is notorious for understating national emergencies.
it's a lot worse than what they are saying

Of course they are not telling the truth. Earlier there was news this reactor was to be decomissioned a month ago. Now the story has disappeared.

They (ETA: the Soviets) did, but they couldn't make it stick after the first few days. Nucleides travel and can be trapped, counted and measured. Of course, the Chernobyl plant was a piece of junk and what went wrong there (the reactor going supercritical after loss of control) has so far been averted.

Here is the latest update from NEI:

Nuclear Energy Institute - Information on the Japanese Earthquake and Reactors in That Region (http://www.nei.org/newsandevents/information-on-the-japanese-earthquake-and-reactors-in-that-region/ - broken link)

It looks like they are using a feed and bleed approach with seawater to control core temperature. It the big scheme of things this will be a success story if they can keep the damaged core contained and under control.

That's a good site...homegrown rather than government fed.
I clicked on the Japan link at the bottom of that page. They can't get in touch with the guy that does it in Japan.

Agreed. I would trust citizens more than the government. It appears anyone can upload infor to their site if you buy the right equipment.

I guess I overlooked the link to Japan. Very sad if he has fell victim.
