Are we ever told the real story about anything?

Don't be naive.

That sounds unlikely. Apart from the acute effects on emergency workers, the main health consequence (thanks in some part to the speedy evacuation of Pripyat) was thyroid cancer, which is the classical outcome of people ingesting iodine-131, typically airborne.

right. that's why i remember it- the sovs were furiously minimizing the situation, meanwhile data was pouring in from sweden and other countries that the air passing over their countries was hotter than a 2 dollar pistol.

Extremely informative article explaining what happened in "lay person's" terms. This was shared with me by a friend currently living in Japan and trying to keep up with information that's as factual as possible. A must read for all interested: Fukushima Nuclear Accident – a simple and accurate explanation « BraveNewClimate

There aren't any radioactive clouds.

Thank you. I have been propagating that article in cyberspace all weekend.

Of course, I care about ONLY the money I have invested in the nuclear industry. But.... the people need to know the truth and not buy into the media frenzy, stoked by Big Oil and the Wind/Solar/NatGas lobbies

I'm still not in favor of nuclear energy over wind and solar, but it's absurd to argue against it from a position of sheer ignorance. And the fact of the matter is, there is (currently) no radiation danger in Japan.

The explosions have damaged an exterior wall that has nothing to do with protecting the radioactive materials. It would be like having a fragile wine glass, packed in sturdy foam that's been cut to shape, surrounded by packing peanuts, put in a heavy-weight cardboard box, then wrapped with gift wrapping paper, and freaking out when the wrapping paper is torn off. The paper isn't in any way, shape or form protecting the contents of the box.

Or, to use the author's pressure cooker on the stove example, it'd be like having that pressure cooker on the stove, in a house with a huge lawn with a fence around the perimeter. If someone knocks down a portion of the fence, it has no effect on the house or the pot on the stove, let alone the contents of the pot.
