Did anyone see the explosion? Boiling water nuclear reactors need a lot more cooling water after an emergency shutdown than a non boiling water reactor does. It is something like 10x as much water.
Is there like a suit we can wear in the event of a complete meltdown?
Does boiling water get rid of radioactive material?
If you live anywhere near a nuclear plant, I'd recommend having a store of potassium iodide pills on hand. Potassium Iodide is harmless and saturates the thyroid to help prevent it from absorbing radiation. Scientists particularly recommend children take them because they're more susceptible to fallout.
Nuclear reactors are nothing more than huge water heaters.
Please.
People, don't believe this. It's nonsense. Buying into the absurd notion that nuclear reactors are nothing more than huge water heaters can get you killed.

I believe the post was in reference to the mechanics. The same thing could be said of nearly any power plant. The only difference is the fuel.
At a scale of 8.9 nothing is really bulletproof and even the best diesel generator doesn't like getting beat up and thrown around like I'm sure everything over there was.
From what I hear, it sounds like the EDGs actually survied the shock of the quake. However they were simply swamped by flood waters.
In any case, it sounds like they are now resorting to Borated seawater injection, which means those particular plants are toast and will never be operated again.
2157: More on the USS Ronald Reagan, an aircraft carrier that is off the Japanese coast. With a 3,200-strong crew and 2,480 air personnel on board, the US military says it will serve as a platform for refuelling Japanese and other helicopters involved in rescue efforts onshore.
2145: Reuters: The number of people exposed to radiation near Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant could reach 160, an official from the Japan Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has said. Nine people have shown signs of possible exposure.
Breaking news, A meltdown may be underway on reactor 4. Just heard it on CNN
Just watched a so called "science correspondent" on CNN explain that Daiichi 1 is melting down because the reactor is supercritical. The man is a fool with zero understanding of Nuclear Power.
