As for private donations...go for it. Sign over your entire savings. And it's not just Japan. I wouldn't donate if it was Canada, Mexico, or even Sri Lanka.
I can believe that about you. That's OK - I just donated twice as much to the Japanese relief fund at the Red Cross because I knew you would not. Somehow.....I think you will prance to the front of the line on Judgement Day - and somehow....I think you are not going to be happy with your review.
Everyone needs to send a prayer to the 50+ nuclear plant workers that are working on, bravely trying to stop a melt-down - and knowing they have been given a death sentence for doing so. My prayers go out to them and their families.

I'm donating tax money against my will. I gave at the office, via withholding.
Since I'm on my 2nd to last unemployment check, I skipped a couple of meals, and won't be driving anywhere to save my gas money....and from those savings, I donated it to the Red Cross. It won't save the world, but I'm sure they could use the money a lot more than me.
...because I wouldn't give'em 5 cents to get cheese on a Whopper.
At least not until we talk debt reduction.
