The coolant story was just hillary talking crazy, as these reactors are water-cooled.

I'm amazed how many people don't know how the Japanese work. It's not another Chernobyl.

Where?
Quote:
WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - The U.S. military did not provide any coolant for a Japanese nuclear plant affected by a massive earthquake on Friday, U.S. officials said. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton earlier had said that U.S. Air Force "assets" had delivered "some really important coolant" to a Japanese nuclear power plant.

I heard Obama mention the U.S sending coolant at the press conference. I don't think Hillary was there.

It was a minor STEAM explosion caused by hydrogen accumulating in the OUTER dome protecting the INNER containment vessel; which was NOT damaged!
Keep in mind that the Japanese use Reactor Designs similar to the United States and Europe(with containment Domes built to withstand a direct hit from a 747 jet)).....this is NOT another Chernobyl....that reactor had a flawed design not used outside of the former Soviet Union.

You are correct ,,I worked building a containment building and they are a buildings with walls of concrete very thick with steel cables running thru conduit around the walls and tightened very tight ,,the roof is egg shaped and very very strong ..these walls are somthing like two feet thick, with a thick skin of stanless steel clad on the interier walls (might be as much as 1/2 inch in guage) And I too was told they could withstand a large jet crashing into it.
As for the cooling ,they could use sea water and just keep pumping it into and around the reactor with in the containment and that would keep it cool .. If they could use the same pumps they had it would be fine . Portable pumps I have no idea how many or how big..
But not that it would matter as this stage of their problems ,,but using sea water straight from the sea with salt in it I think would ruin the plant.. not positive about this ,but I do know that the nuclear plant was not using any water with out purifying it first .
The coolant is Water not antifreeze like some white house goofs has thought up..
