Obama grants $8 billion to build nuclear reactors - The Economic Times (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international-business/Obama-grants-8-billion-to-build-nuclear-reactors/articleshow/5581898.cms - broken link)
Quote:
President Barack Obama Tuesday announced $8 billion worth of loan guarantees to build the country's first new nuclear reactors in three decades.
The loan will go towards two new nuclear reactors to be built at an existing power plant in Burke, Georgia, and is part of an effort by the Obama administration to ramp up nuclear power generation as a clean alternative to more polluting fossil fuels.
It also represents an effort to court conservative lawmakers who are key to the administration's broader goals to reduce carbon emissions blamed for global warming. Some environmentalists by contrast remain wary of nuclear waste generated by the plants.
"Nuclear energy remains our largest source of fuel that produces no carbon emissions," Obama said in Maryland, speaking to a labour union representing electricity workers.

Yah. I agree with you and Obama. Solar enegery would be nice, too.
I can't wait 'til we get off the foreign teat. Of course, somone else will be on their teat. One day, that teat is gonna run dry. Then you're gonna wish your computer still worked, so you can post on C-D forums..
Good thread title, by the way. Glad to see you're on board with the program. Thumbs up, and all.
Here's something cool.....by the way. Link has a couple of mild cuss words.
The US needs energetic diversity : Coal, nuclear, natural gas, wind, solar, biomass..Everything ! Because it's better politically and economically (jobs in diverse kind of sectors and everywhere)
I don't have TV. Just internet and forums for my daily news. Isn't Japan currently dealing with some scary stuff due to the earthquake? Considering all the earthquakes Arkansas is having, then they claim the Midwest fault is bigger than the California faults.... those rumbling Volcanos can certainly create earthquake type problems for Nuclear facilities.
I think Nuclear has way too many uncertainties. JMHO
I am listening to the news right now, and there may be a melt down in progress at that earthquake damaged nuclear reactor in Japan. An exploision just occurred. "This is not looking good right now," the commentator just said.

With the earthquake history of that country, Japan HAS taken precautions for this kind of thing - but what precautions are enough? This does not look good.

They should start evacuating people into their aircraft carriers and arrange for a country to give the people a place to live.
