"What is the system, how does it work and what benefits do public workers get? Matt Stohr, director of communication and legislation for the state Department of Employee Trust Funds, answered the following questions."

Q: Who belongs to the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS)?

Q: How does WRS work?

Q: Who pays in?

Q: Isn't there a disagreement about the terminology over who pays what?

Q: How much is paid?

Q: Are the benefits guaranteed?

For the answers (a Wisconsin Newspaper) which anyone can reference to make their C-D forum points about the Wisconsin union issue:

Good summary - thanks for posting this.

One thing that jumped out at me:

Quote:
The average annual annuity payment for a retiree is about $22,000.
When people talk about "lavish" benefits, is this one of them?

That's current retiree pension benefits. What guaranteed benefits will future retirees get? Given that their salaries are significantly higher than $22,000, it will be MUCH higher.

I'm not sure how you could ever describe health insurance as lavish. I have filed 1 medical claim 8 years. There is nothing lavish about the piece of mind that if i get sick I will receive medical care.

You should think a little harder about that. The relative values will not be any higher.

Apparently, you have no clue how dire the situation is: The problem is the funding gap. The WI teachers' pension system, alone, is short $10.9 billion. The other state pension systems are also short. Where do you think the money is going to come from when the benefits have to be paid?

What's the plan for making up the multi-billion dollar shortfalls?

Then give back your medical care....You still pay a small monthly fee right? Stop paying it...that way you won't ever have to worry about going to the Dr. again.
