I was thinking to myself: What are a few things that everyone would agree would make the US a better place? I came up with:
-Nothing. Somebody will always disagree.

So, I asked myself: What would most people agree would make the US a better place (regardless of party affiliation). I came up with a few things there:
-A clean environment: I think that most people would agree with reasonable measures for maintaining a clean environment in the US. The sticking point is what is reasonable.
-No preferencial treatment of large corporations: I think that most people would agree that laws and legislation that make it more difficult for small companies to compete with large companies are bad.
-No runaway CEOs: I think that most people would agree that CEOs shouldn't have more power than the company's owners, the stockholders, and that CEO pay is often excessive: CEOs shouldn't set their own pay (http://www.irs.princeton.edu/pubs/pdfs/431.pdf).
-American royalty? Really?: I think that most people would agree that the interests of the nation are often not served by politicians who hold political office for 50 or 60 years. I also think that most people would agree that public officials should abide by the same laws they create and shouldn't be entitled to extravagent perks.
-The role of government: Whatever you think that the role of government is or should be, I think that most people would agree that the role of government should be clearly defined.
-I'm not rich!: No matter who you are, chances are you don't think you're rich.
-The United States is a great place to live: No matter what political party you identify with, you're probably fond of your home.

So, I'm curious: Do you agree? If not, why? I like to understand all points of view.

Well let's just take the first. What has come from the GOP that is reasonable on that? Would they ever allow any beneficial legislation that calls for one iota of sacrifice on the part of consumers or corporations?

Rather than assuming what others believe, let's stick with what you believe.

Flash I'm sure that a majority of people in the US can agree on most things but the issue is the tail is wagging the dog in both parties. The votes are almost assured for those in the middle so they cater to special interests.

Well if the Democrats didnt take a Republican idea and turn it into a monstrosity we wouldn't have to worry about that issue. Read your history, both of these came about under republican administrations, more specifically The Clean Air Act the most important piece of environmental legislation ever passed was the baby of George Herbert Walker Bush, the guy who spawned the devil himself if you want to listen to left wing nut cases.

I don't know. I think that it might be harder to find a concensus than you imply. Still, I think that most folks would agree with the statements above. Of course, there are plenty of sources of contention as well. If I were to state that "We should end government run schools in the United States in favor of a private school voucher system." lots of people would be up in arms in disagreement.

I doubt if you will find either party arguing leniency for child molesters. Laughably, politicians from both sides argue for honesty in government. And they both say they want what is best for America, even as their opponents accuse them of wanting to run the country into the ground.

I'll take that as a no. You can't think of anything from the right about the improving the air we breath or the water we drink.

My point exactly. They are not reasonable.

You cannot reach an agreement when one party is not reasonable, unless you are a fool.
