We're not the ones trying to change laws that have been accepted and in place in place as long as this country has existed...and since the time of creation.
Except that this is just not true. In current and past models of various societies, homosexuality is both normal and given the same respect as heterosexuality.
You say "Benefits", but it's really more about protections that come with that legal piece of paper. Committed gay couples that share their lives togthter must draw up expensive contracts to disburse their belongings when they die, for example. If they were legally married and hetro, the widow (er) would receive all of the other's belonging, tax free! There is a case right now in NY where a widow who was married to her wife for 40+ years (in Canada) was charged almost $400,000 in estate taxes (death taxes) when her wife died. If they had been legally married and the Federal law recognized them, it would have passed to her tax free! Isn't it unfair that committed couples such as these don't have the benefit that legally married hetro couples do?
but that is the problem..it is about greed
I think the hetro should pay a tax too
are they NOT 2 individual consenting adults..then why tax as one entity..tax them as 2
its the same with insurance...why should there be 'family' plans...have each INDIVIDUAL pay the proper amount for the coverage they need
homo/or hetro eliminate the 'benefits' and 'breaks' and I bet you 99% of the gays wont even worry about getting the state/countries PERMISSION (you do PAY for a license (therefore it is NOT a right, but a PRIVILEDGE that you must have PERMISSION for)) to say they love someone

One can only surmise you would have said the same thing about women trying to get the vote.

Um, the first law banning homosexuals from contracting civil marriages and denying them the associated legal rights was passed in Maryland in 1973.
What's sad is that guys like you get away with ad hominems because it's the acceptable, politically correct viewpoint.
Well, go cry in the Christian beverage of your choice. When people demonstrate bigoted behavior, I call them bigots.
That has nothing to do with ad hominem, incidentally. If there were some some reasonable argument's, I'd listen. So far, I've heard five:
It's icky
It's different from what things used to be, hence bad.
It's only about the money.
But Jesus!
- and, finally, it can't be discrimination if they never had the right in the first place. (Yeah, still trying to figure that one out.)
Not convinced by any of those, sorry.

Honestly...most Christians just don't much care if 2 guys want to visit each other in the hospital. We really don't.
That's awfully nice of you. But "most" doesn't cut it. One hospital administrator or head nurse somewhere is all it takes, and somebody dies without their loved one by their side. It happens. Documented cases abound. "Most don't much care" simply isn't an acceptable standard for basic rights. People from your side of the debate have callously demonstrated that yes, they very much care about making damn sure gays don't get treated like other couples. And they'll use whatever power they have towards that end.

It's when people start calling us bigots and forcing their minority views on us that we have issues.
Do you deny that gay couples are met with bigotry? Do you deny that people who self-identify as Christian are behind a lot of the discrimination being dished out?
(I use the words "self-identify as Christian", because I have no doubt that the Jewish Carpenter would have some harsh words for them, were he around to comment on their behavior.) Anyway, "gays should be allowed to marry" is rapidly becoming a majority view. Again, your side can only stem the tide for so long. And if your Lord exists, I hope for you he'll judge lightly.
