Since the most ardent supporters of Obama liked him for not being a guy to start new wars, it's perfectly logical to conclude that they wouldn't wait in line on a cold November day to "vote" for someone who they aren't enthusiastic about. It helps more when they rationalize that their vote doesn't make a big difference, just as your explained.

I voted for him because I refused to vote for a fear-mongering old man and a ditz even tho I fully realized at the time he was just another political hack.

Not all support require military presence. Some merely require silence, and sometimes silencing the opposition.
