Subsidies to Amtrak were supposed to be temporary after it was created in 1970. That has not occurred, and Amtrak has provided second-rate rail service for more than 30 years while consuming more than $100 billion in federal subsidies. It has a poor on-time record, and its infrastructure is in bad shape.
The Northeastern system runs on profit....if Congress was fair to Amtrak then the rest of the system could run on profit....but Congress continues to give the Roads and Air most of the $$$ while giving the scraps to Amtrak...

you forgot tires, depreciation, repairs (brake pads, etc) - and registration, property tax, inspections. People routinely underestimate how much of their money gets sunk into maintaining cars.

Privatize the interstate, while you're at it! It's a much bigger money pit than Amtrak.

People in countries with extensive rail network and reliance on it, must be really rich, a lot more than the average American.

As long as it is not for profit by privateers.

and thiose people in other countries , are not paying the OUTRAGOUS prices our government (federal and local (amtrak or MTA) ) are charging

I showed you the infalted prices of amtrak and the LIRR

fact is driving and maintaining a car is cheaper , wiser, and more FREEDOm than the RESTRICTION of a 19th century RAIL that doesnt go everywhere
