That's because the people in the suburbs can't sell their homes and unlike their inner city counterparts, they refuse to abandon them.
Please...there have been plenty of abandoned homes in the Detroit burbs. You actually think that the suburbs have escaped the same housing crisis that exists within the city limits?
I know countless stories of suburbanites who found out-of-state jobs and had no choice but to abandon their homes because they couldn't sell them. When it's your only choice, it's what you have to do.
Much of this is suburban flight. The Detroit Metropolitan Area has stayed steady over the past 10 years at ~4,400,000.
This is true. It's b/c black crime has taken over the city, in all honesty. The whites are moving out to the 'burbs to get away from it.
However, from what I understand, plenty of jobs have been lost due to union influence and yes, the city is largely Democrat (just look at the population there, how many of them do you think voted for Obama? ).
If union wages were less propped up more jobs would have stayed in the US. Unions think they are protecting their workers (and their jobs) through high wages and benefits but in reality they are pricing their workers out of the global market.
Unions should instead become more flexible. The UAW is one of the best examples of how not to work in your members' best interests. The automakers have themselves to blame for agreeing to their wage/benefit demands years ago.
If only the US had led Chrysler fail the first time. Automakers (and their workers) might have realized that they needed to be much smarter about how they run the car business.
I see. The 7% of the working population that are Union members are causing the corporists to ship jobs overseas. Has nothing to do with corporate greed, I'm sure. Wow-I didn't know we had so much influence.
Time to take this old neo-con talking point to bed-no one except those who worship at the alter of Glen Beck believes it any more.

Another one who has no clue about what they're talking about.
Ironic that more than half of the top 15 most dangerous cities are all in southern states. Whether their mayors are democrats I don't know, but places like Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, the Carolinas, and Florida all dominate in most dangerous cities list.
