Your knowledge of history is a little short of accurate.

1. Nothing happened to 401(k) plans from a political or regulatory perspective in the 1990's--it goes back to the Reagan years.

2. The radical left was much more enamored with, and supportive of, the Soviet Union. In the 20's and 30's, a parade of progressives traveled to the USSR to have the wool pulled over their eyes.
