And as has been explained ad nauseam on this board, and even in this thread, gay marriage bans are NOT sexual discrimination. Sexual discrimination is treating the sexes disparately under the law based entirely on their SEX, not their sexual orientation. Gay marriage bans prevent ALL people from marrying someone of the same sex, not just gay people. There is NO discriminatory law that singles out gay people and says they cannot marry.
If a woman wants to marry a man, that's no problem. If she wants to marry another woman, she is forbidden by law based solely on the fact that she is a woman.
That's called gender discrimination. Competely ignoring the emotional attraction related to sexual orientation - men and women cannot marry the same gender due purely to their gender (anatomy).
How selfish of you to declare you and your straight marriage better than ours and deserve marriage rights based on that. Agnostics and athiests are allowed to marry. GAys are not. Please tell us how my gay marriage affects your straight marriage. If you do, you will be the first. It does not affect you and you fail to come up with how it does, you just say it does and that is not how debates work.
Why should men and men, or women and women be allowed to marry?
Why was there no gay marriage in civilizations before the 20th century?
There is no biological component to "race". Race is a social construct which is not based in science. The law would have been overturned eventually based on that fact. Nevermind the fact that even if you want to claim "race" it doesn't change the fact that women of any so-called "race" are still women marrying men of any so-called "race". Males marrying females is the bottom line. And that's what constitutes a marriage.
What other society pre 20th century allowed people of the same sex to marry?
Rome, Greece and the American Indian people before the US government stepped in. Also the Easter Islanders. Same sex marriage and relationships go all the way back in our history and probably into our prehistory.

No. It IS sexual discrimination. You allow women to marry men. You do not allow men to marry other men. That's discrimination, because men are not allowed to enjoy the same privilege or RIGHT that women enjoy, and vice versa.
I re-post this, found somewhere else:
Same-sex marriage looks like formal equality to me. Just as interracial couples wanted race to be removed from the marriage laws, gay couples want sex removed from the marriage laws. On a formal basis, changing “two people of the same race can marry,” to “two people can marry,” looks precisely analogous to me as changing, “two people of the opposite sex can marry,” to “two people can marry.”

Why is this a modern phenomenon?
Greece and Rome had same-sex marriage.
And it's primarily modern, because until the discovering of sexual orientation in the 19th-20th Century, no one had any conception of the modern concept of same-sex attraction. That, and since the church has been villifying gays for most of its history based on crappy biblical translation, gays have been forced to hide. Only in modern progressive societies have gays been able to be more open.
Same-sex marriage was common in Rome until Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire and outlawed it.

Why in Hell would a straight person want to marry a gay one? There are many discriminatory laws on the books that affect gays, including the ban on gay marriage. WE are singled out and denied the right to marry the one we love and are told to have a bogus marriage, you get to marry the one you love regardless of age within consent, race, religion etc. DOMA singles out gay people and you know it.
