Tikrit was once a most beautiful city, a city filled with loving and hard-working people. Sure, life under Saddam was no picnic by any means, but at least people had a sense of security and as long as they kept their mouths shut, they knew they'd be okay. It was a place safe for foreigners from all around the world to visit.
Looking at Tikrit today after the glorious liberation, there are no children playing outside, no animals, no clothing lines hung or even a whisper of voices to acknowledge any sign of life. Most people are scared to death to walk the streets or even leave their house at all. And rightly so, Al-Qaeda and muslim extremists have taken over large parts of the country. Quite ironic when you consider the fact that Al-Qaeda was virtually non-existant in Iraq prior to the awesome war on terror and the US invasion of the country.
A job truly well done, George. Mission accomplished.
I spent 4 months in Tikrit (as recently as January 2011) and I disagree with the OPs assertion that people live in fear and are not out and about doing. Have you ever been to Tikrit?
Umm,they have their own government now...the USA is not in charge there.
Really? They don't have a functioning government. Not in the sense that we are use to having one. They are closer to being in a state of civil war. We are responsible for letting this carnage loose on a people that did nothing to us. We talk about the number of our dead and cry foul. How many of them do we kill for every one of ours that they kill? 10? 100? Going into Iraq was the biggest mistake our government made in my lifetime.
We may not be in charge there but we are responsible for the mess.
