With Hispanics and their numbers being in the news I think a question people could ask is who exactly should Hispanics be compared to? It's being said that Hispanics have passed Black-Americans but should both groups even be compared to each other in the first place?
Because Hispanics represent an ethnic group not a racial group. In America there are basicaly four racial groups: White-Americans,Black-Americans,Asian-Americans and Native-Americans. But Hispanics are an ethinc group that are always being compared to these four racial groups. So since Hispanics represent an ethinic category doesn't it make more sense to be comparing them to other ethnic groups like Irish-Americans,Italian-Americans,Polish-Americans etc? Or is that too complicated?
Well population segments are always being compared to each other. I guess that's how demographic or population shifts are kept track of. My question is more about comparing the right groups to each other.

What in the Hell are you talking about..Why don't you take in a movie and don't embarras yourself in here
Hispanics are not a homogeneous group in any way. Cubans are not like Guatemaleans who are not Chileans who are not like Mexicans who are not like Puerto Ricans who are not like Belizeans.....

Well s/he has a point.... hispanics can't be identified by a skin color like other "racial" groups are. Some hispanics look completely caucasian, some look completely black. I don't think there is any other group they can be "compared" to because they are being grouped together by language (Spanish speaking) not skin color. I mean really, what does the Dominican Republic have to do with Chile? Not a whole lot but their inhabitants would all be called "Hispanic" by us.
Actually one "comparison" that does come to mind is Jews-- someone can call himself Jewish regardless of their racial appearance-- there are Sephardic Jews, Ashkenaz Jews, Ethiopian Jews-- all looking very different from one another but having a cultural facet in common (religion).
