I know lots of people who don't have a driver's license. And not just old and poor people.

When it comes to stuff like this, do two things: Consider the source, and follow the money. This isn't about stopping voter fraud (which is actually rare). It's about marginalizing people who don't vote the way the lawmakers want them to.

The only reason for being against people properly identifying
themselves to vote would be to facilitate voter fraud.
Gosh I wonder how they manage to qualify for assistance, foodstamps etc then............

It staggers me that so many consider the right to vote such an important part of being a USC, until they're asked to actually PROVE they're eligible to vote.

You don't need a driver's license.
You can obtain a state ID that looks
just like a driver's license for less than
the price of a carton of cigarettes.
I would be in favor of providing this ID
free to those who truly can't afford one.

Bingo.

Social conservatives have been fond of these gimmicks for a very long time (e.g., the various mechanisms once used by conservatives in the Deep South to disenfranchise a huge chunk of the population.)

Are you talking about the "poll tax' southern Democrats came up with to prevent blacks from voting?

That's just absurd.
How can anyone be in favor of allowing someone to
vote without knowing if it was in fact that person?
Mickey Mouse and all those other "voters" ACORN
signed up can vote along with the "residents" of
various Chicago cemeteries.
