Us Canadians will take Michigan off your hands!!! The UP is almost exactly like Canada anyway. We'll bulldoze all the ghettos in the Detriot and build beautiful co-op housing for the working poor. the rest of the city we'll turn into a Toronto south. And the very best part of the deal is that we get the WINGS. Yeah!!! Go wings go!!!!
We'll buy up all the houses in Flint that you can buy for a couple of hundred dollars, fix them up and sell them to Canadian retirees that want to retire in the south!!! LOL. We'll get GM to pay back all the money the state has given them over the years like we did here in Ontario. WE would finally get some decent Mexican food here in Canada. The deal would be worth it for that alone. I wouldn't have to drive all the way to Benton Harbour to get a good Mexican lunch for $5 any more.

Nonsense. Take a look at the GDP numbers for California. See how many Fortune 500s they are home to. Consider that entertainment and tech are some of the few growth industries we have in this country. Look at how much the citizens of such a state pay in federal taxes vs what the state receives in direct federal aid.

Califiornia is also the top agricultural producing state in the country.

How about letting some of us Americans have a stake in this? Instead of selling off Michigan and California (not that I as a native New Yorker have a problem with the sale of La-La Land), let's try something different: allow Americans to purchase land there at a discounted rate. If I could acquire a nice chunk of real estate somewhere in, let's say, the Upper Peninsula or maybe the Lake Tahoe area for a summer home, and help another state survive in the process, why, I'm happy to do it!
We could never get what they are worth to us. Just because they may be having hard times now does not mean anyone should forget what they have contributed to the nation and the world in the past, or forget what they are capable of producing in the future. Both of these states have been economic powerhouses, and as one poster has already said, if California wasn't paying taxes to support the rest of the nation, then they would be just fine. If they need a little help just now, so be it. By the way, I am one red stater who is grateful to them both.
