Ireland has been a subsidy junkie for many years now. It isn't a recent thing. They received billions fro the EU over the years. They then built a financial services industry on foundations of sand and tried to attract inwards investment by charging those investors very little tax. All this was paid for by taxpayers elsewhere in the EU. Why should they get another free ride? They had years of the good life and now the bill has come due.
