I went to Waffle House tonight for a late dinner. As always, I watched the cook and thought of how many of us tend to consider such jobs as among the lowest of the low, only for the most desperate, etc. While it doesn't take a rocket scientist to do that job, not just any idiot could do it. The cook never sees a ticket. All the servers shout their orders to him, along with various code words such as "drop one", "smother it", etc. This one guy tonight had 5 servers shouting orders to him. He never had to ask for a repeat. As they were shouting, he was grabbing eggs, bread, bacon, etc. Some orders were fully on the grill by the time the shouting was done. I would say that cook earns every penny he is paid.

Next, my musings went a bit higher. I've recently received the e mail about 555 people in the US Senate and House of Representatives, who get paid a fortune in salary and benefits to do the business of our nation. Despite lobbyists & pressure groups of all sorts, those 555 have the ultimate authority to decide what the nation does. They have collectively plunger our nation toward bankruptcy. Now in the end I wonder: How many Waffle House cooks could do a Congressman's job and how many Congressmen could be a Waffle House cook? Which one would survive the longest?

I'm in the restaurant business. Its not easy what these guys do, and they would do a much better job than many of the politicians we hear about!

Just like policeman, teachers, firemen, etc... these people should be paid more. But, this country seems upside down to me sometimes!

Being in the restaurant business is difficult because, as one multi-millionaire said after opening a restaurant here, your customers are right there, waiting. There is no wiggle room, no room for error, no way to cover up a screw up.

Now, if our politicians had this mind set, that us, the citizens, were waiting at their "doors", and they felt they couldn't screw up, then this country would be straightened out very quickly.

My brother was a waffle house manager for quite a few years, which means he was a cook a lot of the time, too. He said the money was great (well, for the manager) but the job was so stressful. He ended up leaving for a much slower paced job.... managing a Bojangles!

hat456 you are dead on right!! Sadly in my opinion they do know but I don't feel they care or at least enough of them do. Most are too busy getting paid and working with lobbyists to do what is best for them not for the people. Just my 2 cents

It would be nice to see some folks who truly and honestly cared about this country and it's citizenry run for public office. I know there are a few out there - hats off to them! This last election seemed to get some new blood in Washington. However, the "system" has been so worn in and ingrained that even those who head to DC with a mission and a "fire in the belly" end up conforming or leaving the job after a couple/few years. Time and time again, the career politicians spend more time CYAs and guarding their turf rather than addressing the real issues and needs of the people.

So yes, I'd love to see more honest, salt of the earth, hardworking, "real world" folks in Washington and in our state/local offices. I'd love to see some folks with "unencumbered real estate on their backsides" fill those seats instead of the same ol', same ol' riff raff with hineys so mortgaged they need to hold a conference call just to pull on a pair of britches in the morning!

Oh - and thanks a lot, jmellc! All that talk about eggs, bread and bacon's got me hungry! That's it - round up the wife and kids - OFF TO BISCUITVILLE!!

I worked at Friendly's in college and MY manager left to be an AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER because it was less stressful....I kid you not. She said the money was great but the stress was too much.

When I worked there as a waitress I worked with girls from top universities (like Cornell) who couldn't handle it - being a short order cook or a waitress takes a lot of organizational skills and these girls just didn't have them. It's amazing how different people are suited to different jobs.

Politicians jobs are not to serve the people, politicians jobs are to raise money for their respective political parties. If you separated the responsibilities, and politicians weren't responsible for raising funds, perhaps then they would be more interested in doing what's right for the people, instead of what's right for them

An air traffic controller! That's hilarious! They must have thought he was crazy when he walked in and said, "Now THIS is less stressful!"

Its a tough business, you need nerves of steel. And in New York, they complain quick, loud and in your face. Then, sometimes, they even run to the internet to "report" on your place. Ahhh, New York.

These jobs are so hard, that i would never consider trying to do one - I would rather be a congressman or senator - much less brains and skill needed (LOL)
