Taxpayer Alert: The Coming Postal Service Bailout

Facing a projected $6.4 billion loss this year, on top of a record shortfall in fiscal 2010, the Postal Service is expected to slam into the $15 billion statutory debt limit established by Congress by the end of the current fiscal year on Sept. 30. At that point, it could be faced with the choice of running out of cash or defaulting on its sizable pension obligations, including a required $5.5 billion annual payment to fund future retiree health costs.

Government financial sheets all over are hemorrhaging.

The postal service is 100% completely paid for by its own earnings.

NOT ONE TAX DOLLAR GOES TO THE POSTAL SERVICE, EMPLOYEES, INSURANCE, ANYTHING.

If they are in financial trouble, like other companies they will simply either cut service, or raise their rates.

Stop subsidizing junk mail. We would reduce the volume of mail handled and probably could reduce the staff. we could double the revenue on the remaining junk mail. This could solve several problems. less pollution, more income to USPS, less aggravation to households filling trash bins with this unwanted material.

Excluding the cost of prefunding future retiree healthcare benefits and noncash adjustments to the workers’ compensation liability, the Postal Service would have had a net income of $226 million for the first quarter.
So, per your link, they only made a loss when you figured in...what their actual costs were? Those costs including the funding retiree healthcare costs. Isn't that kind of like Bernie Madorf(sp) claiming he made a prophit...if he didn't count for the costs of paying his investors?

i wan to rep you but they won't let me.

I have nothing against the postal service, we have friends that are employees and or retired, but their benefits and salaries are unbelievable, with mondern technology we do not need delivery 6 days a week, junk mail is just that and as hard as it might be for some to accept, like everything else, the postal service is or will be come obsolete. They should not be bailed out.

The only reason they are running at a loss, is because Congress mandated that they over fund their pension liabilities. Some estimates have this overfunding at $75 BILLION dollars..

The taxpayers do NOT subsidize junk mail. The ONLY taxmoney which goes to the USPS is due to federal mandates that the USPS offer free postage to the blind, and discounted postage to libraries.

junk mail is the USPS bread and butter
