They are so afraid of their house-of-cards religion being questioned in any way that they forbid any serious questioning of its beliefs as well as forbiding any competing religions from being preached. Most American consumers wouldn't even stand for this if it was something as benign as dish washing detergent, let alone something as important as the fate of your imortal soul. Imagine if the government required you to use one brand of dishwashing soap, forbid all others, and forbid questioning the ingedients or the effectiveness of the product. Wouldn't you be a little suspicious?
malaysia isnt that bad. they have a lot of dumb laws, especially in regards to islam, but i'll take it over most other muslim countries any day.
What I think is really stupid is the law that states are ethnic Maylays are automatically Muslim. I can foresee this law being repealed in the future, maybe not int he next 5 years but in the next couple decades yes

apostasy is banned in most muslim majority countries tho. only one i can think of where its not is indonesia, and even then you might have problms on the local level. thats just a problem w/ islam, not necessarily the country itself.
I could be wrong, but don't most Muslim countries have a history of some brand of autocratic government? I mean, it's not like countries that were once bastions of democracy are doing these things. Don't you thing there is some correlation between the history of autocracy and this type of society?
