When I see that flag, I shake my head. I can't stop said persons from flying it, nor would it be Constitutional to do so. However, when I see someone with a Confederate flag on their truck, on the license plate, or wearing someone with the Confederate flag on it, I have to ask why said persons would do so.
This is what it is to me: The flag of a traitor. The flag of a vanquished attempt to continue a disturbing institution. Someone mentioned it is about secession, a founding principle. However, WHY did the southern states want to secede so badly? This is why I see it the way I do.
-Look at the states that sought to secede first: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Georgia, etc. Those states had significant slave populations. And now into the next reason.
-Slavery was a major reason the South wanted to secede. Not the only reason, but a major reason. There was a desire to maintain the institution of slavery in the South. Blacks were seen as inferior, and in addition to that, the institution was seen as vital to the southern economy. It is listed in the Articles of Secession. The issue of slavery is spelled out in the Articles of Secession. Alexander Stephens gave his speech on how he found the Black man to be inferior and suited for slavery. I understand that the Union was no friend to the Black man. However, does it refute the fact that the desire to maintain slavery was a major reason for secession in the South?
I think of WHY the South wanted to secede.
And for the "southern pride" thing, there is something that needs to be examined. 6 out of 10 Blacks live in the South. Before, it was 9 out of 10. I never heard ANY Blacks talk about "southern pride", even though they are more likely to be born and raised in the South than any other group. If it was southern pride, Blacks, who have been in the South since the days of slavery, would be claiming the Confederate flag as southern pride too. I am reminded of the words of a woman I know, who is Black, who was born in the South. Her words: "I'm southern, but it isn't my pride".
The Confederate Flag is an historical article which has a rich history for America.
I rich history of slavery and oppression.
