According to the IRS figures for 2009, the top 10% of wage earners in the U.S. paid almost 75% of the taxes, and the top 50% of wage earners paid almost 95% of all taxes.

I say we get away from income taxes and go to a fair tax or VAT tax. That way everyone pays when they purchase. That makes it fair to all, spend more, pay more.

I make roughly ten times what you do, so did I pay 10 times more taxes (30,000)?

Nope. I paid 45+ times more taxes ($136,000).

I'm sick of hearing what's fair.

Btw, people whining about corporations paying taxes should quickly realize that THOSE TAXES are passed onto YOU...corporations NEVER pay taxes - they stick you with the bill built right into the price.
Well, maybe you need a different accountant.

In any event, you had 154K left after taxes, the OP had 27K left over. You have 5.7X more income after tax than the OP.

At the other end, there are seniors with enough income that they are required to file, although they don't actually owe any taxes because their Social Security is exempt.

I don't know if cutting it off at 65 is a good idea, a huge percentage of wealth is in the hands of people over 65. They have the lowest percentage in poverty of all age ranges.

You may be able to find returns by age here. SOI Tax Stats - Individual Statistical Tables by Filing Status (http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/indtaxstats/article/0,,id=96978,00.html - broken link)

The type of return that will pay the least amount of taxes is a family making under $50,000 a year.

uhm

who did your taxes...you should fire them

your taxes should have been less than 2200 ...meaning you should have gotten back at least 800 in a return...much more with the EIC, (which you did qualify for)...you should have at least used a 1040a

I earn 60k and pay nothing in taxes..even get back more than I put in with the payroll tax

$2200 sounds about right. The EIC only applies if you have children.

Right now, my income is quite low (not saying the number, but it's less than $30k). Hopefully, I'll much more when I'm older. I'd be happy to pay higher % of my income in taxes then rather than pay even a tiny amount more now.

The Democrats don't consider you "poor" because you don't have a bunch of out of wedlock children. If you were a single mother making a similar income you would pay no income tax , get thousands worth of tax credits, pay 0.00 for food, get housing vouchers, medicaid, child care etc.
and that "rich" guy making the exact income as you would pay taxes to support your lavish lifestyle. This BTW is why you should despise the Democrat party with all your heart and soul.
