A police officer who thought he was deterring a possibly rabid baby squirrel by pepper-spraying it got sprayed himself with bad publicity as horrified children looked on, screaming and pleading for him to stop.

I love animals and so I'm not watching this video.

Did he believe he was protecting the children from a rabid squirrel? Why did he think it was rabid? Is there any story to this video? It definitely makes a difference if he thought he was protecting the children standing around; otherwise, it's just animal cruelty and very, very sad (and enraging).

Hmmm...

Quote:
Mesquite police said the officer was involved because of reports the animal was behaving very erratically, which might have been a sign of rabies. ... Despite the squirrel's slight disorientation after being sprayed, it is apparently fine
So someone contacted police to 'deal' with it and when the officer does something, he's criticized. What was he supposed to do? Kick it? Cuddle it? Stare at it? Get a net and...then what? If he dismissed the problem, then the person who called would have complained he wasn't doing his job (or taking the complaint/problem too lightly).

[the police can't win no matter what they do]

Non-GMO sunflower seeds - that's what he should have brought with him.

Haha.......LMAO! This cop was a total douchebag and should have been peppered sprayed himself. BUT COME ON PEOPLE! My god again Americans come off as such idiots and such uninformed, clueless idiots. Baby cows, pigs, and chickens are treated 100 times worse than a damn baby squirrel. Why don't you all go show these kids videos of a inhuman slaughterhouse or chicken farm or worse a hog farm. Better yet why dont' I post the PETA video of the Chinese fur trade of raccoon like animals being skinned alive? I think PETA is a very vile organization and I'm no vegetarian or any of that crap but I never cried so hard watching that Chinese fur trade video where animals were skinned alive and one looks up at the camera with a look of pure agony and hell on it's little face. My god! And you people are up in arms over a fricking baby squirrel being peppered sprayed.

Squirrels are almost never found to be infected with
the rabies virus. Squirrels also have not been known
to cause rabies in humans within the United States.

Notice that they all squealed ad the squirrel moved closer to them.

Looks bad but if someone had gotten bit and infected people would be REALLY pissed. Better safe than sorry, give the squirrel some visine.

Honestly, this is reasonable and even understandable IF there was a decent reason to believe the animal actually had rabies. I know one of the children said the squirrel was chasing them but I suspect the child was mistaken and instead the school kids had been feeding the baby squirrel so it associated humans with food. In all likelihood the baby squirrel was walking up to them thinking they'd feed him.
