There are loads of moslem countries where women do no more than cover their hair and, from a recent visit to Casablanca, there were plenty who do none of the above.

The veil/burka is not a religious thing. It is a symbol of male domination of women that islam, in particular, supports but that you also find in other religions. Therefore, banning the veil/burka is not an attack on Islam. But it is very much a defense of those hard won rights that women have in the western world.

This is actually a good counter-argument to a "religious freedom" argument.... BUT, regardless of the origins, it is now so intertwined with certain sects of Islamic thought that it has become a religious practice.

ADDAD, it sadens me that people like you still exist in this world calling people's religions or cultures cults. By people I mean NARROW MINDED PEOPLE. People have the right to exercise their freedom, if you don't like it that is your problem. The world does not conform to your narrow mindedness. If you wish you use the word "cult' understand its meaning and use it appropriately - so ignorant! Just because you do not understand a religion or how a person choses to dress does not give you the right to disrespect it. You are not above any other human being, bring that ego down a bit - you are blocking the sunlight!

cult/kəlt/Noun
1. A system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
2. A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister

There are no figures or objects in the religion and its not strange or sinister no different from any other religion...

Get it right.

There is a difference between cult and religion.

Summary:
1. Cults and religions are ways in which people can belong to a group and receive a way to interact with God and the world.
2. Cults are generally considered to be secretive and illegitimate whereas religion is open and legitimate.
3. Cults are joined through coercive persuasion whereas religion is generally inherited.

Then a western secular society would argue that the protection of women's rights and the western liberal view of the place of women in society trumps the religious rights that certain sects believe that they possess through custom and usage from another part of the world.

It's my viewpoint that your post is a projection of your own personal issues.

The French legislature felt that no's 1 and 3 accurately depicted the wearing of the garment. That is why they are prosecuting persons who force, intimidate or punish women will will and won't wear it.

In Muslim countries, practice of religion other than Islam is banned, you will be arrested and imprisoned, if not executed. Churches are burned, and members murdered by mobs.

In France, Muslims can't throw a sheet over their heads. Cry me a freekin' river.
