Thank you for your service. Grunts are the ones that bring the war to the enemy...REMFs are there to make sure the grunts have what they need to do their job. Otherwise they serve no purpose

Good for you, I scored 96 in General, high eighties in the other three categories, and did the same. Somehow I think you missed the part where I said the Infantry were the true hero's. Trust my compliment was a full frontal assault. However, you are welcomed to take it take any which way you want and I would be humbled.

Young and stupid huh? Weren't we all? Thank god for the young and stupid otherwise we would be typing in German or Japanese.

Best of luck to you and yours.

I don't talk about my military service because I don't wear it like a badge of honor, I looked at it as a way to say thanks to a country that gave me the freedom that I have.
Sorry thank you for your service.

Some served, some gave all, and most wouldn't understand. I admit it...I tend to dismiss those who failed to serve and were medically capable. I have a word for them...but I will refrain.
So you volunteered for the training.
It's an all volunteer force, if you did it and feel nothing but contempt for those who didn't, you've missed the point.

Looking for training, education, free housing, medical, dental, eyecare, because they have criminal records and the military was taking them... they're all reasons why people join.

I'm sure you accept the benefits you receive, don't you.
Then it wasn't altruistic.

My persopnal experience was that the military was made up of young men and women that represented a fairly even cross-section of Americans.
Thanks to all you here, right, left or in-between, that also served, we know why we each served and nothing that anyone else says can change that reality.

First of all, the days of "jail or join" are long over.

You can apply all of your logic you want...this is the way I feel. I don't hate them--ease up...I just don't hold them in higher regards when compared to those who volunteered to write a blank check. Let's just say Vets have a special place in my internal hierarchy.

Please don't get wrapped around the axle with my comments, they are mine--and I am entitled. I'm absolutely convinced you would never understand and I'm good with that.

Feel free to think less of me for thinking so. Best of luck to you.

I asked because often times your MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) often shapes the way you see your branch of the service.

It would be the same if discussing the plight of urban youth from the perspective of a law enforcement officer, a suburban housewife, or a young city kid.

Have a nice day

I also joined the Marine Corps and came from a well off family and educational background. Additionally, I have worked with the military my entire adult life. I did so only because I wanted to serve.

I do believe your own personal experiences will be tempered by your MOS. In my MOS, it was mainly people like myself from similar backgrounds. Of course, I was in what is now known as a 26xx MOS. The testing requirements generally knock out a lot people in that MOS right away. Nonetheless, I think my own personal experience of the type of people I served with is different from my husband who was a grunt. Personal anecdotes will never give a full and complete picture of the military.
