Was reading some interesting blogs today, and some have a good point. If the US military were disbanded tomorrow, you would still enjoy all of the constitutional rights you currently enjoy.
I suppose the idea is that, without protection, we would lose our form of government.
Is this true? Many from the right wing scream constitutionality. Do they know that our forefathers feared a standing army? Madison said that a over powered executive with a bloated military would not long be a friend to liberty.
So why the love affair with the military? I served. I didn't feel I was any better or worse then anyone else.
Why should we thank military veterans for a constitutional right? They didn't give it to us, and the idea that Americans would roll over while invaded by foreign powers because our military is half it's current size is asinine.
We are a government of the people, for the people, and by the people. Without every citizen doing their part, we wouldn't have freedom.
John Quincy Adams feared that a strong military would force the United States to "go abroad seeking monsters to destroy", and racking up huge debt and deficits in the process.
He was forewarning us against the Reagans and Bushes in today's GOP.
I served to make sure you would always be free to say these sorts of things without fear in this country, not for thanks on a particular day of the year.
I thank our vets because many put their lives on the line in combat and many die, the ultimate sacrifice. a combat vets bravery is more than worthy of my respect and admiration no matter what I think politically about the war they endanger themselves for. most combat vets from what I understand don't fight for "our freedoms" they fight to keep one another alive. combat vets live with PTSD for the rest of their lives. being in combat isn't as simple as "fighting for our freedoms" just ask a combat vet if he will tak about it, that is.

I served also, but I think that the myth is without our service that the country would dissolve or have been destroyed. This is simply not true.
The military is a vital need for national defense. It does not provide anyone, any freedom. The constitution does that.

The military does not "provide" for freedom, but it can certainly defend freedom. We were sitting ducks before WWII. With no military, we'd have been attacked on both coasts of the country.
Thankfully, Obama ended Bush's Iraq fiasco, despite the non-stop whining by Republicans and teabaggers.
I'm sure the thousands of innocent people all over the globe that have died because of Obama's drone strikes would have bee quite happy to hear about that happening.
Problem is that most people don't understand the history behind the Day.
