Also strickly from an investing standpoint housing is poor investment. There are other investments and investment strategies that have far greater returns and are far more liquid.
There's actually a small boom in farmland.

I don't know how you define population boom, but most of the projections that I have seen show a very healthy population growth for the USA. In fact, we are projected to grow by 13% between 2010 and 2025. That's an additional 40 million people.
