Let me make it very simple,..

Right wingers = brainwashed fools

Problems = "pork barrel" spending, defense and the tax cuts for the rich, as well as corporate welfare and handouts.

Democrats, libertarians, liberals, independents, all are calling for cuts to defense, but the right wing goons refuse and have actually called to raise defense spending. Medicare, medicaid,..are essential services which the people strongly disagree to cutting. In the budget bill just passed the democrats made massive cuts such as slashing emergency energy assistance to the poor in half, cut pell grands for college students, cuts to clean and a water bills,..but these are just chipping the tip of the iceberg and do nothing but hurt families and next to nothing to lower the deficit.
BIG cuts need to be made but not surprising the right are refusing.

We have $12 trillion in national income (all money earned by individuals, corporations, etc. ) We spend on Federal, State and local governments $6.1 Trillion (this year). All debt, government, personal, corporate, etc is $57 Trillion, the interest payment (not principal) is $3.5 trillion a year.

This leaves $ 2.4 trillion to pay for everything else we do, food, cloths, cars, rent, healthcare, utilities, everything. Every penny that comes out of there is less for us to live on, it is unsustainable.

For every $9 in new debt we add, we now get $1 of economic or income increase, that is not a good return. If the interest on all that debt just goes up by 2% (not counting the additional debt we add) that would be an extra $1.1 trillion in interest payments.

Hype? No.

Raise the debt ceiling, but only as part of a 2012 budget that would put us on a path to pay down the national debt and balance the budget within the next 5 years.

Defaulting on our debt would be a bad thing.

What a great idea. I don't like the color of my wallpaper. I guess I'll refuse to pay my mortgage.

Except, to follow your analogy, you OWN the bank that holds the mortgage.

Civic lessons are your friend

And the Democrats just had control of the Senate, House and Presidency for 2 years and did nothing to cut defense spending.

Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Nothing.

And not one Republican could have stopped them.

Maybe you are blaming the wrong people.

If you don't raise the debt ceiling and the United States defaults on it's debt we face a long term economic decline.

Considering how effectively the Republicans used the filibuster in the Senate to thwart most of the Democrats initiatives if you don't believe the Republicans couldn't do anything from 2008 to 2010 to cut defense spending you are DELUDING yourself.

If fact the Republicans could have cut defense spending as part of the budget proposals they just put forth and THEY FAILED TO DO SO.

The last president who meaningfully cut defense spending ended up with 400k unemployed defense contractors. Not only did this artificially push up the unemployment rate, but it cost him (George H.W. Bush) dearly in areas that were big on defense industries. The last thing Obama would want to do is repeat that mistake in a year before elections.
