It's official; Facebook is heading to Austin. The social networking giant is not wasting time getting started.
“We really thought carefully about it and wanted to find a special environment where we really could grow these teams and grow these careers and work with customers, work with people who use Facebook,” said the head of online operations at Facebook, Grady Burnett.
On the Mayor's balcony at City Hall Friday morning the Mayor along with city and state officials welcomed Facebook executives to the city.
Twenty-four hours earlier, the Austin City Council approved the $200,000 economic development incentive to bring the company to the city.
“This is not about getting people to Austin. Austin has about doubled in population every 20 years since the year 1900. This is about getting jobs to Austin,” said state spokesperson, Tim Crowley.
Austin seems to be the latest hotspot for these companies.
And these are NOT the min wage "buger flipper" jobs that everyone seems to think are the only jobs available in Texas.

Just as Austin is a liberal island in conservative Texas, Austin is a high-wage island in low-wage Texas.

At least three of my MBA classmates took jobs in Austin and only one at Dell. Our school is located in upstate NY.
That's why I knew the "Texas has crappy jobs" meme was false.

Texas is doing so well because they are so much more business friendly than California. California has enacted so many job-killing, anti-business policies its no wonder big business can't get out of there any faster. Texas really is the new California.

Which means at some point it will suffer the same problems as the California.
The yellow rose of Texas is in full bloom right now. Companies are being attracted by sweet tax abatement and incentive deals and lax regulation. People new to the state love the low housing prices. What happen 20 years down the road when:
Air pollution becomes a serious problem because Texas hasn't tends to favor cars over mass transit?
The population growth will lead to chronic water shortages. Water rationing is already being done in some suburbs of Dallas due to a lack of rain. Just about all the water for Houston and Dallas comes from man-made lakes. I've yet to hear of proposals to create additional lakes to account for the population growth. Austin and San Antonio benefit from the Edwards Aquifer and several lakes. But the growth is taxing the aquifer. As more people move to places like Dallas, Austin, Houston and San Antonio the "Heat Island" effect which means the more people that move to these area the hotter and drier they will get.
That "business friendly" lack of government regulation also extends to the oil and gas industry. The includes the injection of carcinogens into the ground water table this is already causing water contamination problems and health problems for people in area where hydraulic fracking is done. It also leads to coal fired electrical plants and lax regualtion of pollution in relation to manufacturing. Dallas and Houston are already amongst the worst cities in the country in terms of air quality.
The K-12 educational system is one of the worst in the country. If you don't have the bucks to live in a quality school district and even if you do live in a quality school district the education isn't as good as what is offered in other states.
The tax incentives and tax breaks given to businesses result in lower tax revenue. Texas already faces a $27 billion dollar budget deficit. How many of state local services will have to be cut or how much will real estate and sales taxes will have to be raised to support the roads, sewers, schools, fire and police services and other things needed to support the population growth?
