You don't see the fact that obama is a socialist, corrupt A-hole that is attempting to destroy our country, either.
Unions must go, and obama must go if we are to survive...
Wow....you win the award for original thought. Can't say that i've EVER heard any of that stuff before.
I remember when the Oyster Bay Line of the LIRR in NY had coal burning steam engines in the late 40s early 50s,a big black cloud of smoke would cover the town of L Valley when the train stoped there.A year or two later deisel engines came but the unions made them keep the guy that shoveled coal on the new engines. He just sat there reading a book or doing nothing and got paid. That was called feather-bedding and the begining of a bad thing for the nation.
The Giant won the World Series last year. Should they just quit playing baseball and sell the team?
You're comparing two sports teams playing a game to labor unions?

Ok, so they're trying to "keep winning" (whatever that means) despite their considerable accomplishments to date, their inflated wages and their obscene benefit packages. Gotcha.
Tell me one thing - what's the "end game?" At what point do YOU feel that labor unions will be obsolete?
Unions are businesses, too. Unions pay people salaries. And unions sell something, their negotiating service, for money in the form of dues. If unions are selling the service, that service has to have a presumptive value. And the value lies in the perception of the employer as the adversary, and the union as the employee's representative against that adversary. Whether you think that unions have achieved all they can for workers, or if you think they have a lynchpin role in the American workplace, what unions are trying to achieve now is continued relevance in the workplace.
Bingo. I know that; you know that; the union leaders know that. The people here don't seem to know that, though, and I'm asking them what they think the point of the labor union is in this day and age.
What's interesting (amusing? sad?) is that the very people who rant and rave about how great unions are and how every salaried employee working for every company should be represented by one will post in other threads about how evil "corporations" are and that the bigger the corporation and the more power and influence it has, the more urgent the need to destroy it (e.g. check any Wal*Mart thread in this forum). They're too ignorant to understand that labor unions are some of the largest - and certainly the most powerful - corporations in the country. Whether that ignorance is willful or not, I don't know.
I pass by this building on my way home from the office:
That's the culinary union building here in Las Vegas. Judging by the style and appearance of the paint job, it's been there probably since the '60s or so. I see/hear/read the same kind of rhetoric today.
My questions are, what are the unions trying to "win?" Is it a game? A competition? A war? Is there a prize?
I thought unions were supposed to be about "fairness."
When businesses get together to collude, they call it an illegal monopoly.
When workers get together to collude, they give them a spot in the presidential cabinet, and all sorts of special exemptions.
[b]So you really can't see the difference?? Do you really think the employer and the employee are on an equal playing field??????
Do you know what happens when an employee suddenly up and quits? The company tells the remaining employees they're gonna have to pick up the slack until a replacement is hired. Then very often a replacement isn't hired because the company notices the remaining employees, who are now doing more work, are able to handle the extra work. Try doing that if you get fired, tell the boss of your night job "Hey I lost my day job today so you're gonna have to pay me more till I find another one/B]

Sure they are.
The employer is, by his own free will, choosing to pay someone to do work.
The employee is, by his own free will, choosing to work for pay.

That isn't necessarily true.
But occasionally it is, and so what? It is the employer's decision, because the employer owns the firm and is risking his or her capital, NOT the employee.

I wouldn't say that to my boss, because I'm not a complete moron.
