“Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” • George Wald, Harvard Biologist

We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation.”
• Barry Commoner, Washington University biologist

“By…[1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.”
• Peter Gunter, professor, North Texas State University

“It is already too late to avoid mass starvation.”
• Denis Hayes, chief organizer for Earth Day

“Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….”
• Life Magazine, January 1970

“Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it’s only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and none of our land will be usable.”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

Yeah, but cooling trends are caused by global warming.

If what you say is true then it's all the more reason to laugh.....

In the greenie world the left mouth has no clue to what the right mouth is saying....

Just like global warming...... which "experts" does one believe?

Personally I tend to dismiss "experts" and their organizations who stand to make mucho $$$$$ with their predictions....

If the majority of scientists predicted global warming why did the CIA take the global cooling scientists so seriously?

Quote:
According to the CIA report, in 1974 climate science was developing ‘a successful climatic prediction model’, as indeed it still is. Government intervention had brought together eminent scientists who had previously been at odds with each other then had established a ‘scientific consensus’ on ‘global climate change’. The scientists claimed this pattern of cooling would cause ‘major economic problems around the world’. Dealing with this would, of course, require the creation of several new government agencies.

Of course the New Scientist is not blatantly biased are they? For the most part it's a sensationalist rag where most writers lack the basic knowledge of what they are writing about..

No slcpunk, I weep for all the fools who believe in <ahem> global warming.....

Things are melting. That's obvious. But maybe it's just climate shift, not climate change. Hard thing to prove or disprove.

North Dakota use to be a sub tropical paradise. It is now very cold snowy region. Did man do that?

Since it is getting warmer in and around Mt. Everest, could it be earth is moving closer to the sun?

I see the agendaed ones are still trying to turn and Earth Day thread into a global warming thread. I wonder why. Could it be that there is no argument about industrial pollution and its potential species ending effects. Its clear though from even a small sampling of anti-global warming threads that the main opposition to acknowledging that threat is the cost in dollars of mounting a campaign to reduce greenhouse emissions. Cost to whom I want to ask. Are any of those who post, often without solicitation, attacks on the intelligence of those who advocate acknowledgment of AGW and its potential for harm going to be directly affected by the cost of countermeasures? Make me see it. You are more likely to be affected by refusing to take any action until it is too late. Just saying.

George Carlin was a very savvy guy and the overall bent of his politics were decidedly Left. I am a bit bemused to see one of his routines being used to bolster a right wing argument. The Earth will never forget Man was here. A nuclear waste storage facility will linger long in the memory of the planet of our activities. All future life on this planet is going to have to reconcile itself to the legacy of chemical and nuclear pollution that will be their environmental inheritance.

It's not so much that those doomsday predictions were off-the wall, but the fact that many of things DID happen or are happening but we still manage to mitigate, weather them and/or remain insulated from the negative effects.

For example:

What they said:
“Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

And what happened:
The world hunger problem: Facts, figures and statistics

Hunger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What they said:
“Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….”
• Life Magazine, January 1970

And what happened:

Environment in the People's Republic of China - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What they said:
“By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate…that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.’”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

Oil ends a penny lower at $112.28 a barrel - MarketWatch

What they said:

“Dr. S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.”
• Sen. Gaylord Nelson

And what happened:
A conversation on TED.com: Biases in 6th mass extinction event?

We can only ruin the world for ourselves...and if humanity goes extinct, it will be because humanity destroyed itself...because they were too stupid to think ahead.

Because science totally isn't a fluid thing that day-by-day factors can change the face of.

Here are some of the hilarious, spectacularly wrong predictions made on the occasion of Earth Day 1970.

Just ONE of the hilarious predictions listed.

And there are SO MANY more not on this list.
Haha...where DO you get your information?

"no one" ???

Please post the proof that "no one" believes what global warmists say... Go on....show the proof....where is it?
