Many social welfare services go beyond just providing the minimum amount to survive. Services such as subsidized cell phones, HAMP modifications (foreclosure/renting is always an option), surplus EBT funds (much of it is sold at a fraction of cost to others or exchanged for drugs/alcohol).
Nah, the analogy holds.
Ok, so you are happy with "redistribution of wealth" to provide a minimum amount to survive? Clearly, then, you see that "redistributing" money is reasonable at times. But the analogy tries to say that it is the same as GPA redistribution, which I've yet to see a good reason to do. This is a clear problem with the analogy.
We can argue the specifics of what the money is spent on, and what constitutes a minimum standard to live, but the point is, if you agree with using tax money to help ANYONE at all, then according to this thread/analogy, you should also want to redistribute GPA. Do you?

I want to do neither. It appears to me you'd be happy doing either.

Oh ok you are for no government assistance period? No matter the situation? Nothing for the elderly, disabled, not even short-term assistance of any kind? Abolish medicare, medicaid, ss, food stamps, work source, emergency room, everything? Police, Firefighters, roads..? You basically have to be against all taxes to be on the "right" side of the OP analogy. Because to be true to the analogy, taxes are GPA points.
By the way, don't try to misrepresent my position, it's intellectually dishonest.

Good post!!! Agreed!!
I got an ad in my mailbox two days ago... addressed to occupant... that I could have a free cell phone and free minutes each month if I was qualified. The qualifications... I had to be on food stamps/Sec. 8/Medicaid. So not only do my tax dollars pay for the free phone and minutes, but it also paid for the ad and the postage to send to every mailbox whether we qualified or not?? Ah... now there's an economical use of my money.
So not only am I paying my cell bill... but my tax dollars hard at work... Sorry, but you don't need to have a cell phone to survive. I'm dating myself here, but we did just fine for years before ever having one.

Excellent post! I don't have a cell phone - I don't want it, I don't need it, and I refuse to spend the money on it - for myself or anyone else.
