"Government is not the solution to our problems, government is the problem".
- Ronald Reagan
Government's only role is to secure the unalienable rights of the citizens who elect them - rights that are endowed upon us by our Creator - and the role of the federal government is limited and the powers of such are spelled out in the Constitution.
Government needs to butt out and let free people interact, achieve things, produce and provide products and services, and live without meddlesome intrusion from regulatory bodies.
I vote for balancing the budget - there is no reason to spend outside of our means - and a return to constitutionally limited government will help achieve a balanced budget, will allow tax rates to be lowered, allow people to keep more of their hard earned money, allow that money to be placed in the hands of investors and other risktakers who by their actions will stimulate the economy, create jobs, and cause prosperity to spread.
Furthermore - balancing the budget should be done without tax increases: we have a spending problem - not an income problem. Lowering tax rates has been proven to actually bring more tax revenue in because it stimulates job growth which expands the tax base and facilitates more income generation. This is supply side economics 101.
Balancing the budget will also address the debt - which I believe is what the GDP option was referring to - since debt is usually described in terms of its size compared to the GDP.
There's a lot of controversy about what the government should currently be doing that started in around 2009. What do you guys think and why?
The responses are two simple.
Save social security, don't touch it.
Balance the budget and inspire job growth by, cutting defense. Stabilize healthcare by making certain that no one can be denied care for pre-existing conditions, and then turn medicare into a voucher system that would ensure care through that privatized system, and that all private citizens be responsible for only 50% of their bill, and that their private insurance would go towards that. The government will pick up the remainder of the bill after you hit age 65.
Also, let the Bush tax cuts expire.
Also, use money saved from cuts to programs, there are many that can be cut, to build roads, expand space exploration, put up a monetary prize for leaps in alternative energy sources, even things like natural gas, etc.
Something in that ball park. My personal rights and choices should be expanded, as the federal government needs to get out of peoples personal lives.
