One reason is they don't attract creative people in enough numbers to bring new life to them. Lots of people find the whole notion of the civil war being noble disgusting; its a turnoff.

What you just posted proves that blacks (which make up a larger percentage of the 2 states that we're talking about than the national average) account for a larger percentage of people in poverty than the percentage of the population than they make up. States like AL have higher percentages of blacks who based on your numbers have a higher tendency of being poor and they use a higher percentage of welfare benefits than any other race group per capita.

Are you sure this is true? I thought the reason why repubs donate more money to charities than the dems is because they are better off.

If I am wrong then that would really cast the dems in a worse light than they are already in now. What a bunch of greedy, selfish animals these people are. All that prosperity and they are less likely to share it.

thx for the info Tempest, I know I can count on you to make me see the light

Do they need a dash of social progressiveness or what?
Partly due to the economic make-up of those states and most of the true conservatives and Tea Partiers are not poor regardless of what state they live in. In fact many of those states have more registered Democrats than Republicans. It is the handful of those who are tired of seeing so many live off the government that get involved in the Tea Party.

Overall the poorest parts of America are counties in South Dakota where the majority of peope are Native American and White Amerifcans. Counties in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas where the majority of people are Hispanic and Counties in Kentucky where the majority of people are White Americans.

The over 70% of the people living below the poverty line in this country are White Americans and Hispanic Americans.

And White Americans combined with Hispanic Americans represent what percentage of the US population?

All of which is true but none of that changes the fact that over 70% of the people living below the poverty level of either White Americans or Hispanic Americans.

Also the number of Black Amricans living below the poverty level decreased by 50% over the last 50 years and in actually the actual number of Black Americans living below the poverty level hasn't increased much while the population of Black Americans has more than doubled in the same period.

If Black Americans. left this country tomorrow en masse America would still have a significant poverty problem.
