Its a political move.
Make Republican Senators either vote for a Medicare killing bill, or make them vote against it.
Its a very real possibility that a Republican could filibuster it though, just to keep from voting for it. This hasn't gone over well in town halls, or with the public. President Bush tried changing social security, that didn't go well for him or the Republicans either.
Democrats are playing politics with Ryans bill, but who can blame them?
This is going to leave three options, as I see it.
1. Continue mounting debt, while keeping tax cuts and never cutting anything.
2. Raise taxes, cut responsibly, and do things Republicans really don't want to do.
3. Raise taxes only and don't cut anything.
Of course option one and three would probably destroy the nation and the economy, lets hope number 2 happens.
My Republican friends, its time to put down the end social security and medicare banners. Its obvious that most Americans want these programs, and as such they are going away. Focus on defense and other big budget items in the budget. Social security and medicare retirement age can be raised on everyone under the age of 40 to the age of 70 years old. That wouldn't cause to much fuss, and its not ending the programs for anyone.
Cut yes, but smart cuts, and changes that people can accept. If it wasn't clear to you before, I'll state it one more time.
80% of Americans like social security and medicare JUST THE WAY IT IS.
