Winnie the Pooh was written in 1926 when society, social attitudes and gender roles were hugely different than they are today. I am sure that A.A. Milne set out to write a children's story and not to be "sexist". That is always the problem when you try to judge something that happened 85 years ago by the standards of today. It is testament to his genius that his stories endure today.
If you let academics with an agenda loose on our literature we will soon end up with nothing to read.

I agree completely. Now read the first two comments to that link to see what has happened, in reality, I think.
That has to be one of the most ridiculous studies ever. And she was paid to do it over a 20 year timespan, I hope taxpayer money didn't go to that...And as far as Winnie the poo goes, it was written by a Father for his son, so the main character being a boy is not surprising.
I really doubt anyone cares about this study though, people are going to write about what they want to write. So there are more males in Childrens books ? Ok, so what is the problem there.
As far as Female leads go in books there is Charlotte's web, its a book about a Female spider who is the smartest spider in her clan. Ive been out of school for years and read that, and never once did it occur to me to think "oh wow!!, this book has a female [spider] character in it".

You didn't think that way about Charlotte because you weren't trying to do away with any of those things in order to replace them with left leaning stories that may well swing the thinking of children to thinking properly by the time they get to high school and then college.
You weren't being forced to think in a PC manner which the progs want everybody exposed to.
That study is just a idiotic waste of money and time. How about a study on Anne of Green Gables? Is it sexist because most of the main characters are female? Little women and so many more stories about girls and their world. It's just too stupid to give much thought to!!

That is true, but gender unlike race is never something that will stay a hot topic for long. She wasted 20 years of her time more or less, it would have been better spent on trying to win some freedoms for women in the Middle east, that is if she really cared about women's issues.
As far as her targeted audience goes...I would be surprised if women really gave a hoot about more males being in children's book than females.
It's bulls**t like that in the OP's story that makes academia and college educated types seem like out-of-touch-with-reality pointy heads with nothing to contribute to mankind.
It's not that long ago that some US churches burnt Harry Potter books, and I don't think you would call those people Liberal by any stretch of the Imagination.

Maybe she's p*ssin' and moaning about the story because a wonderful caring MAN wrote it for his child totally destroying the irresponsible absentee sperm donor father stereotype upon which her hate of all things male is predicated.
