Just who is to decide who is and is not "college material"? I think any high school student who isn't in special education classes for developmentally disabled people can handle college, at least at the Community College level. Most vocational courses have gone over to the CCs from trade schools.
I'm sick of hearing about these supposedly "dumb" professors. My DH has a PhD in physics, and he can fix an engine. I know plenty of high school grads who cannot.
You don't decide, you present all options available to the student to further their education including vocational school and military.

Somewhere along the lines aptitude has to figure in.
Else you have to dumb down all education to the lowest common denominator. We already did that in K-12. Let's not do it in college.

That doesn't answer the question of how it is decided that someone isn't "college material". The military is not supposed to be an educational option. A lot of "training" those people get has no application outside the military. Most vocational school is done at CCs these days, where the student can continue on if s/he wants to.
It's a myth perpetuated by dumb people so they can feel better about themselves.
Not a myth. I see such stupidity daily at work. We have engineers who design things that work on paper, but not in reality. They can't seem to realize a pen line making a 90% bend is not the same thing as a 6inch pipe making a 90% bend for example. The nurses at work are really good but some of them come up with some head slapping stupid things. Some examples include "how do you flush yogurt down the toilet?", "my keys got flushed down the toilet, go get it.", and many many others. Just because you have a degree doesn't mean you're smart.
In the IT field, degrees mean nothing. Certifications are everything.
I work on the Software Engineering side of IT and certificates mean much less than degrees. Matter of fact a PhD is quickly becoming the norm for anyone over 20 years of experience.
Just another right wing outcry against education...zzzzzzz
