Officials attempt drastic break with failure at Huntington Park High, Manual Arts

Many students oppose planned changes at Huntington Park and Manual Arts high schools. This time the radicals are the adults.
After years of shamefully poor student performance, the campus has been ordered to restructure and replace at least half of its teachers before its new school year begins in six weeks.

poor student performance = bad teachers ?

Love the absolutes. Since they have no control over the students' home life and parent involvement they go after the teachers.

The problem, in many, many cases, is not the teacher. Kids that don't want to learn and know the system will just push them through are not going to change with a new teacher.

I went to a school that well illustrated that there are communities wherein even the best teachers will fail. When 2/3 of the student population considers any demonstration of intelligence or education to be a social taboo, and this anti-intellectualism is actually instilled by their community, parents, and idols, it can only be a losing battle.

When they fire these teachers and hire a new set, what will be the background of these new teachers? I suggest they hire a cadre of the most successful and experienced teachers (just headhunt at the local privileged, wealthy school) and see how they do. You will discover that even the most talented chefs can't make a gourmet meal from Doritos and Pepsi.

The culture created inside the schools shapes the kids more than the culture outside shapes the schools.

The teachers are not the only problem here, of course. The administrators are just as much to blame, and, most of all, both schools being part of a massive district which is not only inefficient but super-corrupt on a level that would shock a Chicago politician has a great deal to do with it as well.
