I think that the 72 virgins was one of Mohammed's means of making his soldiers more loyal. He also promised that those desert people would spend their time in a garden with running water, growing plants, etc. I bet it really worked pretty well for his soldiers and he was busy conquering that part of the world and needed loyal soldiers.

You're making the same mistake the suicide bombers made. There was a misprint, they don't get 72 virgins, they get one 72 year old virgin...!
