EXTREMELY debatable. The majority of Native Americans died of diseases they had no immunity to. And the numbers are almost impossible to nail down. The United States of America was only a very small player in that game anyways. Best guess estimate: There were originally about 14 million Native Americans living in what is now the USA. In the most recent census a little over 2 million people categorized themselves as non-Hispanic, Native American. This does not account for all of the Native American blood that has been mixed into the rest of the population of course.
The biggest credible number that you can come up with: Somewhere between 1 to 4 million Native Americans died due to actions of the USA. Some more sensationalist (and far less historical) accounts try to put the number over 100 million -- which seems a bit of stretch since there never were anywhere close to 100 million Native Americans in the USA at any point in time. And even if it were credible, the highball estimates for Mao Zedong are right in the same neighborhood, and he managed that tally in a lot less time and against his own citizens.
The
big players in the massive population reduction of Native Americans were the Portuguese and the Spanish. But how do you determine which were massacred and which died of Smallpox and other diseases? That's where the numbers get pretty tricky.
