I was wondering about that as I read an article today which described how an Iranian woman (Amene Bahrami), who had been blinded by a student in an acid attack a couple of years ago, will be legally allowed to blind that man in return tomorrow, also by means of acid dropped into his eyes. The courts have asked her to forgive him and not to do it, but she is determined to make use of her right.

An eye for an eye, quite literally...

Really a tough decision
What kinds of crimes is such an attitude and punishment inadequate for?

Well, a lot of people do take Moses seriously.

Look..these people may be physically living in the 21st century but they live by the "old rules".
That is their way.

Sure, those are not Western standards, but then again, I have read many people on this board suggesting similar ways of dealing with criminals. Not to mention the death penalty, which is not far from it

Thinking about it, I find blinding more terrible than the death penalty...

Things that make you go hhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm.

Sounds about right to me. Amazing how little we have evolved in the last 3700 years since that first legal prinicple of "Lex Talionis" first appeared.

Considering that Moses is considered one of the greatest prophets in Islam, I'm pretty sure, the idea stems from such sources as...
"But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise. " - Exodus 21

In this case, an eye for an eye.

Is the human sense of justice inextricably linked to revenge and retaliation?
