Personally I would say thank you for spending the capital and taking the risk to explore and drill for oil so that I can put gasoline in my car, despite all of the obstacles and exorbitant taxes put in place by our government, as well as the narrow profit margin.

You already say thank you when you fill up your gas tank. T

I don't think they even give it a second thought or even care what people would say, we have to hit them in their pockets.

What percentage of your operating costs and earnings goes to alternative energy research, outside of petroleum?
It's not just the gas in your car. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, your electricity, etc.
All require OIL.
Almost every facet of life in America requires oil. Imagine turning off that spigot...
Most people with rational thoughts will say this.
Yes, we need oil for lubrication, plastics and synthetics, and countless other things.
However, we won't always have a need for it for transportation, there are other viable alternatives to petroleum based gasoline right now. Mainly natural gas, but electrical alternatives are just around the corner as well.
Most oil companies aren't spending even 10% of their money on viable alternatives. When they say they are researching alternatives, they mainly mean alternative sources of oil, not other fuel types.
No doubt oil companies are using some of their profits for r&d in solar, natural gas, and other alternatives, but they want that for 50 years from now. When you're making record profits, and the country and people are unwilling or unable to do anything about their addiction, why change things?
Republicans and Conservatives support them blindly no matter what!!
The Democrats and Liberals are more than welcome to stop using gas all together.
