Gingrich promises to slash taxes, calls Obama ‘food stamp president’ - The Washington Post

Quote:
“President Obama is the most successful food stamp president in American history,” Gingrich said. “I would like to be the most successful paycheck president in American history.”
Has a nice ring - paycheck, not food stamps.

Of course, Newt is right. Obama can claim another nefarious record in his list of accomplishments - record number of people on food stamps under his watch.

Record number of Americans helped by government safety net - Apr. 13, 2011

Quote:
The number of people in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as food stamps, hit a record 44.2 million in January. That's up 4.7 million from the prior year.

Currently, one in seven Americans receive food stamps, the highest share of the population ever to do so, according to the Food Research and Action Center.
Think we'll be seeing this great accomplishment on the obama campaign trail?

I suppose that he aughta let them starve, eh? What would YOU expect from the president in view of this ecomomy, the unemployment and all of the warmongering
that he inherited? Somewhere in our basic rights, like life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, there must be compassion from our government and food on our tables, so,
why can't a blowhard like Newt accept that? I wonder how well he's eating and who it is that is responsible for paying his way as he climbs his personal ladder to success?
If there's one thing that really peeves me, it's people like Gingrich, who are so ready and willing to step on the hands of others while he climbs a personal ladder to success...

I have no problem with individuals on Food Stamps that really need it. I have a problem with the ones that abuse the system. There needs to be a reform on Welfare/Foodstamps. Our country could .probably pay it's dept with what it's giving out to the ones that abuse the system

But Obama extended the tax cuts for the wealthy like the republicans wanted! I thought extending these tax cuts for the wealthy job creators was supposed to lead to more jobs. What happened?

Oh gee, the adulterous hypocrite has spoken. What next? The litany of excuses for his behavior?

Social programs like that make up a miniscule part of the budget. They're good red meat issues to get votes, but irrelevant in the grand scheme of spending in comparison to military, Medicare, Social Security, and even the overall discretionary budget.

I think it's a sad sign when a nation is pushing to not provide basic food for its poorest citizens, but I agree that there needs to be a reform to end the extended abuse.

It might be a great slogan for the "Tin Foil Hat Crowd" but the reality is the number of food stamp recipients increase over 50% during George W. Bush Jr. terms in office.

I thought the OP mentioned Newt increasing "paychecks" instead of "food stamps."

Would not paychecks be associated with jobs? Would not increased jobs lead to decreased food stamps?
