To answer the question, there are about 60M passengers a month that fly, give or take. so it comes out to about 3% a month.. if thats very, very, very few, sounds objective..
I really don't think its a big deal, I got one last month when I was flying down to Charlotte at JFK. I went through the body scanner, but only took the stuff out of my front pockets, and stupidly left my wallet in the back pocket. The scanner picked it up, so I got a pat down. Wasn't much of an issue, was over and done with in 30 seconds if that.

That's because you already whent through the radiation machine and they were just checking on the object that showed up on the scan. The groping you get if you opt out of the radiation machine is much more severe. Didn't you see the former Miss America that was brought to tears by the experience? Oh, and I'm sure its random but it always seems to be people like former Miss Americas, pretty women, and other nice looking people that get randomly selected. Maybe they should just let everyone roll two dice when they get in line. If it comes up a 12 then you go through the enhanced security circus (a 12 on 2 dice is also about 3% so they could still hit their target numbers). Of course that might mean they would end up searching fat ugly people and old people instead of little girls and nice looking women. It might even get an Arab person, which would immediatlye be decried as racist.
